Scholarships for Higher Education Abroad Expanded to Include SC and ST Students with Annual Income up to 8 Lakhs

Scholarships for SC-ST students: Bhopal (State Bureau): Now, students from the SC (Scheduled Caste) and ST (Scheduled Tribe) categories with an annual income of up to eight lakh rupees will also be eligible for scholarships for higher education abroad. The government is planning to amend the rules for this purpose. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced this in Sagar recently. Currently, students or their parents with an annual income of six lakh rupees are eligible for scholarships. Additionally, the scheme will now include humanities subjects. The Department of Scheduled Caste Welfare has prepared a proposal for this, which will be presented for cabinet approval.

In 2014, the government increased the annual income eligibility limit for SC and ST students’ scholarships from five lakh to six lakh rupees. The Chief Minister had announced raising it to eight lakh rupees. Provision has already been made for SC students. It has now been decided to extend the benefits of the scheme to students pursuing higher education abroad. The Department of Scheduled Caste Welfare has prepared a proposal for this, which will be presented to the cabinet for final approval. This proposal also includes the inclusion of humanities subjects.

The number of students will remain limited to 50

Currently, the scholarship eligibility is for students pursuing postgraduate and PhD courses in engineering, pure sciences and applied sciences, agriculture sciences, medical, management, international commerce and accounting finance, forestry and natural sciences, and law programs. Department officials have stated that the number of students in the scheme will remain limited to fifty as before, so there will be no additional financial burden on the government.
