An academic scholarship provides money that does not have to be repaid and is usually awarded on a merit-based basis. CUNY and its 24 colleges and schools offer more than 1,000 scholarships, awards, and special program opportunities. Students can receive some scholarships as they begin their college careers, while others are awarded as they progress through their major – be it a science, the arts, or the humanities. Some awards are based on need, while others are based on merit. A complete list of all scholarships and financial awards is available at each college. There are thousands of private organizations that provide assistance to college students in addition to scholarships available on CUNY campuses. Scholarships are awarded according to a variety of factors.
